We had a truly great time with Melissa in Rockport – we were on the go for the whole time we were there. One of the really great things about couchsurfing as a group and as a concept is that you become involved in the host’s lifestyle, even if only for a day two. We were with Melissa for over two weeks, and she involved us in every aspect of her life.
We loved the boys – they are exceptional kids – and we loved Melissa’s cooking, among many other things. It’s hard to believe what she can do with food in so little time and with so little effort! We are looking forward to stopping back by when come back through from our short break in Florida.
We have been very lucky so far and we hope it continues. Roger picked us up Sunday night and brought us back to Port Lavaca. It’s great fun being here again. We love the laughter and the irreverence around these guys. We had another of those nutty shopping trips to Wal-Mart last night – who could believe that a trip to Wal-Mart could be so full of fun? Josh even had the shy young checkout clerk laughing.
Roger splurged and invested in a coffee maker and a pot for cooking, so we had coffee today, and boiled a whole batch of spaghetti in one turn, instead of two. We’ve settled in to getting things done – I’ve done some writing, and Chelsea has finished and uploaded the recent photo albums (we found wireless access here again).
We have totally lucked out with our rides so far – I posted a listing on Houston’s Craigslist, and a guy wrote us within a day. It turns out that he works at the same plant where Roger, Josh and Chris work, here in Port Lavaca. He came by last night to meet us, and he’s very nice. He lives in Florida, but since there’s no work there (he’s an electrician) he’s working in Texas.
We are leaving right from here with him on Thursday after he gets off work, which should be around four in the afternoon. We will drive straight through to Ocala, Florida. He’s asked me to take the midnight to four a.m. shift, so I’d better be rested!
We still need to find a ride from Ocala to our home, another 223 miles. There’s only one couchsurfer in the area, and if we can’t find a ride we’ll be hopefully staying with him till we can find one. I have listed on Craigslist on both Orlando and Ocala, so we hope that something shows up right away. We so want to be home!
We have missed our family quite a bit, and we are looking forward to downsizing more, and getting some things out of storage that we could use. Alex has had our passports, bankcards, and Chelsea’s driver’s license, and it will be seriously wonderful to get those.
I’m also looking forward to the time to write. I can feel it bubbling up inside me – writing is a funny thing; it can’t be commanded, like just doing the dishes, it has to be there ready before the writing can begin. I am looking forward incredibly much to sitting down and letting it roll.
I will probably not write again until Saturday or Sunday, after we get home and get a chance to settle in, since we do have some things to do to get ready, and we want to relax and have some fun here, too. We’ll do a quick posting on the home page to let you know that we’ve arrived home safely.
Signing off from Port Lavaca…
