Getting back on the road
It’s nearly 10 p.m. and Chelsea and I are headed out tomorrow morning early for our first real riding day of this next phase of our trip. We spent 3 months in Delray Beach, back at home, getting things all buttoned up for our next four years south of the border, then we took a 21 hour bus ride to New Orleans, where we spent the next 11 days. In New Orleans we managed to go on two picnics to Lake Pontchartrain, an overnight trip to the Algiers section (by bike, with lightly loaded trailers), see two evenings of Wednesday on the Square, get a huge amount of bike trip tasks done, and see the French Quarter a number of times.
Our couchsurfing.com host, Darryl, after being an incredible help for the full 11 days, packed us up with our trailers and took us to Norco, a small town just northwest of New Orleans. We’ve been staying with another awesome couchsurfing host, Judith, resting up (we slept 13 hours our first night here!) for the last 3 days, and tomorrow morning early-ish, Judith will take us across the Mississippi in her awesome van, where we’ll start riding.
We are heading northwest along the Mississippi River, hugging the river for the most part, until Donaldsonville, where we will head south to Morgan City, then west to Franklin. We’ve already lined up a couchsurfing host in Franklin, where we’ll stay a few days, expecting some packages to arrive (my new contact lenses!), and where we will catch up on our paperwork. We are aiming to submit our first articles for publication during that time.
Our route will take us through plantation country first and then through Cajun country. We’ve chosen a route that closely follows the scenic highway areas in this part of the state.
I’ll be posting more about what we did in Mission Viejo in CA, in Delray Beach FL, and New Orleans and Norco, but I really, really wanted to get something out before we take off. Stay tuned for all the blog updates, and check out all our photo albums.
